Hi Folks

Would anyone be able to specify the model number of this Stromberg Carlson radio?

Stromberg Carlson

The valve line up is: 6J8G, 6U7G, 6B6G, 6F6G, 5Y3G and is a dual wave radio. The ARTS&P label is F, indicating a 1939 model, however all the radios in AORSMs for that period, with similar valves, use a 6V6G, where my chassis is clearly marked 6F6G.

Other differences are a 3 position tone switch, 2 tone and off, and it uses a dual chassis mount capacitor, 8 + 16 microfarad which doesn't appear in any parts list.
It is one of the ugliest radios in my collection, but it deserves a name!

Harold

The model 59 (AORSM Vol 3, page 247) appears similar except it has a 6A8G instead of a 6J8G. It has the same tone control & 8 μF +16 μF you described. That said, not all Stromberg Carlson models ended up in the AORSM books. Could be a 539?
Wish I could be of more help.

Cheers.

Is it a mantel or console model?

Is the quoted valve line-up as per a chassis sticker or simply what is in it at present?

There is a photo coming, folks.

Meantime, GTC, it is a mantel and the valve line up is as stencilled on the chassis. My radio has a 6V6GT in place and I don't think it worthwhile to revert to a 6F6, as there are a few other changes made.

Thanks

Harold

Is it B/C only or does it have S/W as well?

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

One hopes the cathode resistor was changed? 6F6 has more grid bias than 6V6.

6J8 is a sw valve introduced around 1939. There was a lot of chopping & changing of valves during war. and there was a reversion back to 6pin.

The HRSA model list shows a model D39, AC BC/SW 5 valve mantle.from 1939. However, no valve line up.
Wouldn't the model/serial number also be stenciled somewhere on the chassis?

Thanks Monochrome625

You have done it!!

My serial number is D3972468 so a D39 it is. What threw me off is that it doesn't appear in the AORSM for any year and while there are a couple of pictures in various books, they don't specify the model.

Thanks to all other contributors to the search.

Harold

Harold.

I've sent you an email regarding your Stromberg D39.

Cheers.
