Hi everyone,
My name's Wendy, I just joined the forum after doing alot of searching on the internet trying to find some info about a beautiful old radio given to me about 20 years ago. I am new at this, so I will describe it as best I can. From this site I have found out it is 1935 - 1936 as it has a light blue tin label attached with pins inside the cabinet saying you need a licence Etc. No.4
B- 47822 then number 34 stamped into it.
6 pronged vavles from the USA . To plug it in, it has a plug that looks like it plugs into a light socket. Where all the valves are is called a chasis I think? The number PF 1572 is stamped into it. It has a Jensen- concert speaker- electro dynamic. model D18 Type number- F1186,( not sure ,hard to read) ohms 1200. Manufactured under licence by Jensen (Aust) Ltd.
The cabinet is timber - upright - stands on the floor, it is 38" high & 18" wide across the top & nearly 11" along the side from front to back .
On the front It has 2 round carved knobs, a dial with outside diameter of 10.5cm & inside diameter of 7.5cm with the words - Musician - just off centre & kilocycles at the bottom of the dial. A beautiful ornate pattern is cut out in front of speaker. The cabinet has wooden wedges glued inside where it is all joined together & the 2 front feet of the cabinet are carved into a 3 tiered shape.
Sorry for the drawn out description, I have no idea where the radio comes from, Australia I'd say with the Jensen speaker & I would like an idea of what it would be worth. I was going to take it to an antique dealer to see what they think it was valued, but I was advised not to.
After all that , can anyone help me? I can't find any information about this radio.
Thanks, wendyden
.

G'day Wendy,

A picture of the radio would be very helpful in this regard. You can send as many as you like to webmaster.iserv.com.au and I will publish them in this thread for you.

The "B" prefix on the licence transfer means that your receiver was made in 1935 - a nice old one. I also agree that you should steer clear of antique shops. Your radio may well be worth far more than an antique dealer is prepared to pay for it. It can be said that they have to eat and pay bills but you do too. Ebay or one of the Australian auction sites like Grays Online would be better choices or you could offer it for sale here in the Wanted and For Sale forum. Smile

All done. It's been touched up a bit in Photoshop, an image editing programme, to make the contrast look a bit more realistic.

This radio looks to be in rather good condition for its 73 years. If you want to sell it there is no reason why you couldn't get a few hundred dollars for it. If you plan on keeping it please do get it looked at before plugging it in. Old radios can sometimes hide dangers such as faulty electronics and modifications carried out by experimenters, backyard boys, etc.

I have a list of people on this website who service old radios, it can be access from a link called "Services Directory" near the top of the page.

Otherwise, it can still make a very good conversation piece. Smile

Hi Brad,
Nice photo, thanks. Any ideas of origin or value? I couldn't find much info about it myself, only what I found here on Vintage Radio.
Cool looking radio - I reckon.
Wendy

At the moment I can't pinpoint the brand. I notice there is a word printed under the needle on the tuning dial however it is not clear in the photos. Would you be able to tell me what that word is?

Regarding value, it is hard to put a real value on consoles as they are not always highly sought after. This is because of the space they consume. I have thirteen with room for a few more though unless a collector has a large shed dedicated to their hobby, collections of consoles are rarely this big.

The word is MUSICIAN
I have looked in the index of brand names & on other vintage radio sites on the internet & can't find it anywhere, hope you have more luck. Let me know if you do.

Isn't there anything on the chassis that could identify it or is it something like I have, a kit radio dated in the 1930's. Give us a photo of the back please.

Hi Rudy,
If the chasis is the metal base that has all the valves / tubes & electrics on it, This is stamped into it : PF 1572. I have sent Brad 15 or so different photos of the radio front & back.
Wendy.

The chassis may be the same as this one in Silicon Chip
