Does anyone know anything about this radio brand please.
Vontane Dual wave mantle radio.
I have asked Brad to add an advert photo from August 1946 from The Argus, Melbourne.
The advert says:

MANTEL MODEL

A timely birthday presentation is Mack's dual-wave. 5-valve "Vontane" mantel model radio set. Always famous, post-war "Vontane" brings you all that you could ask for In radio performance. This set is presented in an attractive cabinet finished in a rich Walnut. Immediate delivery is available. This radio set is featured as a birthday special from the House of Mack's at 19 guineas. Easy Terms, Home Storage. £19/19/-

"VONTANE" CONSOLE

Yet another sensational birthday presentation is Mack's "Vontane" console model. 5-valve, dual-wave, it presents the latest and best in radio reception, and yet, with all its ultra modern features, its delightful and distinctive cabinet finished in a rich Walnut, it becomes a birthday feature from the House of Mack's and represents the very best that Melbourne has to offer in radio value. Mack's say come and see this "Vontane" console model presented as a birthday feature for £22/19/6.

Vontane Radio

Does anyone know anything about these, does it look like another brand of radio from known manufacturers?
Peter

Not me. Many companies were too small to have a presence in all states. Vontane may have only sold sets in Victoria or even just Melbourne. Until now I'd never heard the brand so I'll admit I am clutching at straws a bit.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

A lot of retail stores in Melbourne sold radios under their own brand. Mack's Vontane is no exception. The question is who actually produced these radios? Maybe Mack's had a little radio factory themselves. Though it is more likely there was a radio factory pumping out generic sets for the various Melbourne retailers to put their own brand on.
I know a old bloke, now 90, who used to assemble radio chassis for Kingsley Radio in the 1930's. Kingsley Radio in the 1930's was at 247-251 Spring St. During the war they moved to St. Kilda Rd. They used to sell coils and dial mechanisms to radio-constructors & hobbyists. Maybe Kingsley Radio made the Mack's Vontane - or at least the chassis'. There is a list of Australian radio manufacturers in 1939 licensed to manufacture radios by the AUSTRALIAN RADIO TECHNICAL SERVICES & PATENTS COMPANY. See Trove Newspapers Argus 08/02/1939 page 12. I'll do some more research.

I have added a link to my Flickr site for Vontane Radios.
The bloke I am trying to help sent me some photos of his after he had it restored.

With all due respect to the restorer, this cabinet looks very much like a backyard job. It's solid timber, not veneered like professional mass-market cabinets. The "walnut" must have been a stain colour, not the timber. Unless the cabinet has been completely replaced at some point with what looks like some kind of softwood.

How many makers were building floor consoles in 1946?
Must have been one of the last, surely? Or perhaps using up pre-War stock.
