Hi all,

I have just inherited an STC model 250A radio and despite searching the net can't seem to find any information about it.

What we were really hoping to know is:
a. What year was it made?
b. What is the value of this item for insurance purposes?
c. What is the market value?

A. According to my data, the 250 was manufactured in 1946-47.

b. & c. There is no official market guide to these sets. Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. It also depends on many things including: whether the radio is working or not, is it completely original or has been restored (and how well), if it has cracks or other blemishes, its colour, its collectibility (i.e. desirability), its rarity, a sense of personal nostalgia for a particular set, etc, etc, etc.

As I often say, ultimately the value of anything depends on what a buyer is willing to pay you for it on the day that you want/need to sell it. On that day you may find a number of people willing to bid against each other for it, or there may be no bidders at all.

There are some Australian radio models that fetch ridiculous amounts of money in almost any market, but that model isn't one of them so, as regards insurance, I would not value that particular model very highly; I would just list it along with the other household items. However, if it has deep sentimental value to you, and you would endeavor to replace it should it be destroyed or stolen, maybe $100 would cover it -- if you could find another one.

You could do a search of closed auctions on ebay to see if any of that model sold, and how much. Failing that, look to see what similar radios fetched. It's not likely to stand out, probably typical in vintage household items as far as the insurance company is concerned.
