Here is a link to a film about the good (bad) old days on top of Mount Panorama in Bathurst, the home of the Great Race. It shows what life was like when city boys moved in and took over.

Some of it is amusing to watch but there's no question that the more popular you made yourself, the safer you were. How some people weren't killed is beyond me though.

As for the Police... well they new they weren't plentiful enough to try stopping anything. They stood, watched and at times joined in. This is the way it was. Today the Mountain is a much more peaceful event.

Well, I took a quick look at this film, and paused it to watch off peak ... except that it somehow un-paused itself and played away to nobody while I was elsewhere, using up my peak quota as it went! Grrrr!

So, I have to wait a few days until I can watch it.
