I just wanted to let those of you who knew my father, Jim Lowe of Newcastle, he passed away this morning, Sunday, 3/10/2011.
A man with a life time of radio knowledge that I can never hope to emulate, but will try since taking over his collection.
Dad built his first radio at age 16 with the help of his mother on their dining room table. I now have that radio to cherish. A little general.
Regards
Peter

Despite not knowing Jim personally, I am sorry to hear of his passing and I am fairly sure that a number of members will share your sorrow. Jim's name appeared often in various pieces of vintage radio-related literature and there's many links to his personal website.
Going by the material on his front page he was a well educated and intelligent man and also a man possessing a great deal of integrity and community spirit. His contributions to the preservation of vintage radios and the vintage radio fraternity will not be forgotten.

May he rest in peace.
A photo of his first radio would be great to see.

The Little general in the Jan 2009 mag was a recently built one I think. I have not seen that edition, but is it the arch shaped one. When I get back home after the funeral on Friday I will post a photo of this 67 year old radio.

The radio is boxed shaped and the accompanying story relates his struggle as a young man to buy the parts required, and then how the radio accompanied him through life to be finally restored in his retirement.

Peter is steve here ive only just seen that Jim passed I knew your dad he had my books etc on history - yes he knew a lot about radio definately !
I sympathise with you on Jims passing another great radio man goes to the workshop in the sky - in the last ten years there must be 45 or more that I started with in 1990 that have passed on - the ranks are thinning )) I guess all the more reason we must keep it all going !
Take care mate, I know to a degree you will pick up where Jim left off .- he loved his old sets it kept him going, as it does for so many of the guys!
Regards steve
