In its heyday, Mullard was famous for making very high quality vacuum tubes.

This period Mullard documentary shows the valve manufacturing operation at just one of its British factories. In 1962 it was the largest such plant in Europe. By the early 1980's it was all over.

An attempt to revive the factory was made in 2006 by Blackburn Microtech Solutions a spin-off from Philips, but that faltered in 2009.

I'm fascinated by the sheer scale of the thing, from the number of people it employed to the huge investment in often highly intricate machinery. Mullard manufactured its own wire, glass and chemicals.

The film is in 6 parts on YouTube. It starts off rather slowly looking at buildings and outside functions, but soon picks up pace as it gets into the nitty gritty. Here's part 1. Just follow the YouTube links for the other 5 parts:

Great films. Some time ago I posted some other Mullard links here and really wish there was something similar for one of the local manufacturers.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...
