Thanks to all who gave help and advice on re-capping etc. and supplying the schematic for my Kriesler 11-75 portable radiogram.
The set is now up and running without any noise other than the cricket broadcast or the music from my old 45s.

I'm looking to buy a similar model that my mother owned and I pulled apart and wrecked when it broke down.

It's a bit later than that one, but the external features are very similar.

It was a stereo unit, with the a speaker in the lid providing the second channel and a longish cable on it so that you could separate it form the speaker in the front panel.

The 11-75 model reference will give me a good pointer to start from.
