Hello, I have access to a collection of antique radios, spare parts i.e valves etc, valve testing machine, wireless weekly's dating back to the 1930's. I am too young to know what is what and the person who collected it has past away. I am wishing to organise, value and then dispose of said collection. Known items include a blue astor mickey, HMV little nipper amongst others. Condition of all said items is as none of which have been restored but whether any actually work I do not know. Some radios are shelf models as well as some floor models.

I have wondered whether there would be any interest in actually digitising the wireless weekly's so as to have a resource in which I could make some pocket money Smile

Thanks

G'day,

I would be interested in talking about this further. Do you mind if I e-mail you?

Brad.

PS: No-one ever too young to collect radios, I started when I was around 17. Smile

I admit that it does take some getting used to though. One does need space, etc. Regarding the digitisation of Wireless Weekly, I would enquire about this with the Editor In Chief of Silicon Chip magazine first as I believe they are the copyright holder for Electronics Australia and its predecessors; Radio, Television and Hobbies, Radio and Hobbies and Wireless Weekly.

Yep no worries, The collection is by no means organised as the person had lots of other things he kept due to his line work i.e. repairman for 34 yrs and I am unsure what to throw and what to keep. To give you an idea of how much there is it takes up the predominant area under their house as well as some in 2 other rooms. Does the name Phil Ireland from Bathurst mean anything to you?. By the way I am not that far away from you.

By the way tried to look at the MEMBERS list but it says it is a dead link is this a privacy problem not allowing us to see other members

Ahhh yes I have heard the name but never met him. I am not really at Hill End though I do camp there about 4 times a year - it's a very peaceful spot. I am in Sydney but can come to Bathurst with no dramas.

Regarding the member list, it's one of the couple of things I've never got around to completing on the site. I don't think there's a privacy issue as such though as a mark of respect for those who do like to fly under the radar I plan on installing a function where members can remain off the list if they so wish as most forum software releases have a similar thing.

I'll forward an e-mail tonight. Wink

Libranrooster,

I would also be very interested in knowing what radios you still have on the market. Is it possible to send me a brief list of radios you have. My email address is peter_i.hotmail.com.

Cheers
Peter

Libranrooster,

If there is eventually an auction can this be advertised in Vintage Radio?

Thanks for taking the effort to properly dispose of the collection.

For HRSA members, April '99 carries an article from Phil Ireland.

Hello again to all, firstly a brief list of radios would not really be possible as there probably is hundreds of radios and I think they are called "chassis's"? He was a great horder, nothing has been disposed of yet from collection and part of the reason why I am not saying where I am is purely to do with security (I apologise).

As for wireless weekly's I would be interested in knowing from different members what is a reasonable price for them. The collection of them and other radio mag's is contained in about 8 sealed 50l tubs with rollers.

As for an auction I intend to use this forum as my selling place if possible i.e. whether I post details of a radio or whatever and seek bids on them or whether I advertise a one off Auction somewhere I need to determine.

Overall I see 100's of hours work to prepare for an auction and I am not sure I have the knowledge to do that. There would be well over 100 square metres of items. Hence you can see my dilemma

I had one collector come and look at some of it and I felt as though he was trying to capitalise on my naivity about the items and believe me the collection can go to landfill if I get that feeling again. I would be looking for reasonable prices not dirt cheap or extravagantly high.

Thanks everyone for your interest

If you have the time ebay may be a way to slowly dispose of the collection. The prices obtained are reasonable especially for the most collectable items, eg an Astor Mickey OZ (1933) went for $910. For the less collectable it seems to vary but would depend on the right buyer coming along.
The down side is you have to mail them.
Watch ebay for a while and see how it goes.

Try

The best way to get an impartial view on price without going to the effort, time and cost of auctioning is to post a list of items here and provide accompanying photos as per my reply in this thread.

As most members here are active collectors and know what a given item should cost them you are more likely to get a fair payment for what you want to sell.

Please post this list in the Wanted and For Sale forum and I will upload any photos you want included as soon as I receive them. Sadly there are some people out there who will try and exploit peoples' relative ignorance of an item's value. When more people become involved it generally keeps people honest.

As an example, the blue Astor Mickey you mentioned above will be worth quite a bit if it is in good condition. Depending on the year of manufacture and condition it could be worth anything between $300 and $2,000.

The price range will depend on condition. For example the above "blue" Astor HNQ is in very rough condition with a major crack in the case, a bit missing, knob missing and dial showing hairline cracks. I doubt that it would achieve $300, but then you never know till you try.
The AWA 429MA is a robust and well followed bakelite radio released in 1951. Unrestored examples currently sell for $25 to $100 depending on colour and condition.
Just search "Radio in Collectibles" on Ebay, put "Radio" in the title field and "Collectibles" in the category field; this will find 99% of all historic radios on Ebay.
