I realise that this is only significant to myself, but 40 years ago I was on vacation in Australia.

Re your first link, some history remains, in the form of the Central Hotel, Cairns. Though now a shopping centre, it retains its external form including the ironwork but minus the XXXX signs. Some history repeats itself; evidently we are due TWO comets this month.
