Way, Way back in the early sixties, I built a special AM mantel radio which I'm sure was from Radio & Hobbies as I remember the lovely blue/white circuit. - I'm somewhat annoyed with myself now as I still have it, but no reference to the original article at all. I even folded & drilled the raw chassis from 18# aluminium. That was the way we did things back then. For most things I made & still have, I kept any original documentation with it but not this Radio.

It was special because it had a tuned RF stage - 3 gang Roblan tuning Cap., 2, 455K IF's & the valve line up was 6BH5, 6AE8 (X79), 6N8, 6BM8 O/P & 6V4 rectifier. It worked very well & pulled in stations from all over the place.

About 30 yrs.ago I severely modded it with a balanced aerial I/P, new caps., germanium diode detector & silicon P/S rectifiers. I dug it out about a month ago to do a "proper" restoration as it looks a mess.

A few weeks ago I contacted Nicholas Vinen at Silicon Chip re this radio & he very kindly sent me digital copies of all Radio & Hobbies from around this period, but as he admitted, not all are in their archives.

I have now looked at all available copies from the mid 50's to early 60's but no luck.

So, does anyone out there know of the original article from around that time? Any help would be be most appreciated.

Perhaps I should have mentioned another possibility that just maybe (??), it was originally a tuner & I added the audio section to turn it into a mantel radio. I don't think I did as I seem to remember the complete published blue circuit.

One other thing I've noticed going through the old issues is that the headings did not always reflect the project.
Eg: "You Can Build This", " Playmaster Program Source."

Perhaps I should have labelled this, "Memory Test."

That valve line up does not quite seem right.
But I have all the copies and will have a look, and report back.

So far my only find is August 1953 page 53.
The circuit uses a 6BH5 as the RF amp, but thats the only similarity.

I have to admit it's an unusual combination of valves, but it would have worked perfectly well.

One of my tactics when a circuit like, STC Chassis 59 an EMMCO and a few others over a number of years; Is to spend the often tedious effort in drawing what you have. Starting with a layout diagram, or photo: Then play join the dots.

Once you have that you, or others can look at it and appraise it. You do not fix anything you think wrong at this point. It happened that infrequently, that I bought an AutoCAD program, for the express purpose of drawing layouts & circuits.

After reverse engineering the STC, which had been hacked. The circuit was drawn; Explanations as to its origin & what changes had to be made, and why. Were sent to HRSA and Kevin Chant, in case another turned up.

This is an "AA6" (All American 6 tube) with an RF stage I have, and I mounted the circuit board into an RCA bakelite cabinet.
