Seems to be a cookie problem on this site.
On my computer at another location I kept getting logged out when I tried to access the forum. I noticed there were over 200 cookies, so I blew them away, but didn't have time to see if it fixed the problem.
On this machine there was no issue logging in, but there were 190 cookies, so I deleted all of them too.
I can only imagine the infighting between the various cookies and what unpredictable results might occur.
Brad, is this supposed to happen? No other site has anywhere near this number of cookies.

I have the same issue and, at times, I believe it causes me access problems, so when that happens I purge them all.
It may be related to the 'keep me logged in' capability -- which I use.

Logging in and freezing are not new and this site seems to be the most susceptible, over along period. I have never really decided if its cache issues, cookies, or arguments between programs. I did dump one Anti Virus program after it protected the computer by making the outside world virtually inaccessible: That not being what I had in mind.
I have CCleaner as the amount of TSR crap that can invade swiftly. The net is gradually being choaked by greed caused by an uncontrolled plethora of adds, of a volume worse than that of commercial radio &TV.

This site only issues one cookie when members sign in. Other cookies that appear (including on my computer when I sign in) are not issued by this site. I don't know where they come from but they aren't pushed to members by the site itself. Unfortunately the web is a far more complex place than it once was, which is why I do not build websites anymore and I do not understand the wheres, whys or hows relating to the extra cookies. There are also several types of cookies that can wind up on our computers now including the traditional text cookies and also Flash cookies and there may be others I do not know about.

The 44-byte cookies that I refer to appear to be "session" type generated by V-R. Here's a small sample of the total of 54 of them currently on my PC:

They might be getting pushed out by the server - the login/logout system is based on the more modern ASP.NET rather than the slow, old Classic ASP that the forums use. I'll check it out at the weekend but I will have to do some research on it first. As far as I know, session cookies should automatically expire but, again, this is all new to me. The bit I do know is that the forums only require one cookie to work correctly so it baffles me as to why this happens.
