Makes me sad.
Back in the days when we made things in Aus.

Melbourne had so much character in the 1950s as can also be seen in location photography of movie "On the Beach" (1959?)

I love seeing these old pictures of Melbourne south of the river. Such a contrasting change to what it is now.

The picture of the corner store shows its extensive advertising for Cadbury, Nestle, Fanta, Pepsi, Tarax, and many Cig brands! In other words he's a drug dealer selling caffeine, sugar and nicotine! It's the same today, I still walk to corner store for a fix when feeling in a funk!

pic of 1950's Melb cnr store:

...by contrast, downtown Melbourne was alive and well in the 1950's. But would go into a gradual decline with the rise of suburbia until today's inner cities are pedestrian ghost-towns.
But in the '50's, apart from Myer, there was this other big dept store I saw as a kid when we'd visit from the country, walking from Flinder's St; it had a giant ~60-ft Santa outside beckoning shoppers into the store; its name was puzzling - Foys - so I must have been able to read Smile

I wonder if that Foys was related to Mark Foy's department stores that were in Sydney.

Yes, the Melbourne Foys is related to the Mark Foys of Sydney, but perhaps were separate businesses. The store, which still stands, is situated on the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I somehow recall that there were two Foy brothers who had a falling out. Mark had Sydney and the estranged brother had Melbourne.

I don't like all those Asian-style postmodern skyscrapers that dominate today.

Sydney has the best building which related to vintage radio - the AWA Building in York Street. As it is less than 150m high it is not technically a skyscraper but it was Australia's tallest building for quite a while.
