Not just Paddo, also other inner city suburbs developed during the era when terraced architecture was popular here such as Surry Hills, Dulwich Hill, Glebe, Annandale, Newtown, Persham, Stanmore to name a few.

Personally, I am not a fan of those dark, narrow houses. Dating back to horse and buggy, they are often in narrow streets with no off-street parking.

A good example of Victorian splendour and oppulence is the Graithwaite mansion in North Sydney, now owned by the school next door to the estate the mansion sits on. A hall that is as wide as a modern lounge room. Ornate timber stairs and a widows walk on the roof with a wrought iron balustrade - all dating back to the mid 1800s.

One would have to spend some serious cash on a place like The Abbey in Annandale to match or beat Graithwaite for sheer size and originality.

I went to walk around this old empty 'Kalvelage mansion' due to good warm Halloween weather (thanks to climate change?) and check out where Jeffery Dahmer's residence was torn down behind it! Look at its fine brickwork at front by immigrant German craftsmen! The large moulded Telamon figures on portico were done by the once prolific Northwestern Terra Cotta Co of Chicago, and are said to be derivative of architecture in Old Dresden!

This reminds me of a beautiful old Mansion in Binnaway near Coonabarabran, built in the great depression years to keep the local tradies in a job. All double brick and a hallway big enough to fit my entire house in.

Fireplaces in each bedroom.

Interestingly, I was able to gain a rare tour inside this Baroque Schloss before it was sold to current owner. The former eccentric owner didn't want to live in it - I surmise because it was haunted - but roomed next door in part of an otherwise empty house! At that time this owner had it crammed with antiques - mainly Victorian mechanical musical instruments including a stunning Aeolian-Orchestrelle that he claimed he was offered $100k for. He played a roll on it - rich sweet pipe sounds!

According to link in first post, it was a 'hospital' during Great Depression! I would think inadequate by today's standards - consider the electrical alone: poor wiring, fusing, no or little grounding? Its archived promotion in website touting its O.R. as having "Nitrous-oxide, Ethylene, Ether"!
