I assume the location is somewhere in Canberra. Given the price of petrol and a wet weekend I didn't go.
Anyone have any news?

O'Connor is a suburb of Canberra, yep.

Certainly is and the scout hall is easy to find, so is my email .
Had a good day, a few bargains to be had. I got a Astor big bow which is a set I always wanted. There is another Private Auction on I believe the 24th! Lots of high end sets as its a sale put on by the local president Richard Begbie.
Email me for directions if you like. Its members only I believe.
Carl.

I've seen that happen time and again at Sydney HRSA auctions. Seems that the market for consoles in any condition is zero these days.

Hi Carl,
The last photo of a portable record player has just answered a question I had for many years and never got to ask. I used to work in a retail store selling white goods, brown goods and kitchen appliances for about 15 years. The firm also serviced white goods and brown goods and one of the things I noticed with the TV servicemen was they often carried around a box that was covered in faux(?) crocodile skin. It was filled with valves to carry with them when they went into homes to service TV's.
Good to know that it was once a portable record player, sadly no longer working but the cabinet put to good use.
I am sure others have re-purposed cabinets to good use.
Sadly consoles seem to have lost their appeal for various reasons but some, and I have seen them, are really worth getting. I saw an excellent example of an AWA console up for auction online about a month ago, however I stuffed the bidding due to an unusual bidding process to miss out.

I used to have a large collection of consoles but was forced to scrap some that I couldn't find room for but were pretty much no-name sets. I do still have some consoles and a few radiograms but the radiograms are in storage and the consoles are classics - early AWA and Airzone receivers from the 1930s and also a Raycophone which weighs a tonne.

Hi Carl,
They are a very nice set the AWA 45E. I do have a similar vintage AWA console, just slightly older that will sit proudly in my home.
Only problem is the legs are rather fragile and I intend to build a plinth to protect the legs from 'wild' vacuum cleaners. I do have space for it. Once one acquires a few more, then space does become an issue.
