This is a question directed to those who live in Western Australia.

I'm asking what AM stations from around Australia can be heard in WA normally at night.

Here in the east the band is full of NSW, Vic and Qld stations, with some Tas, SA and NZ thrown in - so there's no chance to hear anything from WA. I'm wondering what the situation is like over there.

Actually, I wanted to know what stations you can receive at night... Can you get Adelaide or anything from the eastern states? Other countries?

Definately can get quite a few SA stations at night in locations away from suburbia.

At home I can here SA & VIC stations on an external vertical antenna.
For some years now, I havent heard any indonesian stations (BUT I haven't been actively searching for them).

Thanks for the answer. I'm impressed that you can receive VIC.

On my newly installed Pioneer car radio parked up at home in Perth hills I can pickup 531kHz (6DL) Dalallinu which is 10Kw at reasonable signal level..no idea as to what exactly and 558 kHz (6WA) Wagin on 50Kw very good level. IE NO Noise.

Still struggling to be able to reliably step across the entire AM band and seek out just what ES stations come over the border as night falls.

5DN Adelaide used to be regularly heard but so far have failed to get onto that frequency.

Have printed out copy of the 40 odd pages of the Pioneer manual but manual tuning instructions are rather scant in that so its become a matter of just fiddling about not quite knowing what the hell I am doing.

I don't think 5DN exists now.I might be wrong but I thought 5AA was the sole surviving AM commercial station in Adelaide.

UPDATE: After a few years of radio hopscotch in Adelaide, 5DN now transmits on 1323kHz and calls itself Cruise.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Thanks Brad....Been long time since I have heard 5DN.

When I was out on the Trans Line at Rawlinna we had an ABC landline go through via the old open wire phone system (5.6kHz upper audio limit due to line filters) and there was a spare program line on another open wire pair and the Adelaide Program room used to patch the 5DN audio onto that for us blokes at the repeaters across the Nullabor.

The ABC was OK but we frequently would get multiple repeats of Blue Hills sent over IF the Perth studios muffed the recording it and request a repeat.

5DN was then VG music station and we loved listening to it but it all came to grinding halt when someone accidently patched the 5DN program into the ABC line whilst it was taking a LIVE broadcast from that program line.

So for about a minute or so 5DN was being broadcast in Perth instead of the usual ABC program and the poo hit the fan over that and from then on 5DN was removed from the spare program line.

Silly move really as by having live program coming down the line and many techs listening to it any issues got promptly sorted and a few times after that we found that the spare line was unworkable due to a fault somewhere and then the ABC had NO program when the normal line fell over and Adelaide & Perth patched the ABC program over to it.

It amused us techs immensely listening to Adelaide & Perth program rooms trying to sort out the problem after that.

That story reminds me of working in Telecom's Philip Island radio terminal in the early 80's. I was installing a PCM radio link to the mainland. There was a space shuttle launch scheduled that day and NASA paid Telecom to provide a secure communications link as a back up should their primary link fail.

It must have cost them a fortune because part of the deal stated under no circumstances should there be any humans in any of the radio terminals or repeaters associated with the dedicated link path. To enforce this NASA paid our wages for the day and we were locked out and sent to the beach for an all day BBQ with management's blessings.

Your experience Kakadumh tells me that NASA were well aware of our occasional cock-ups.
