If the Governor signs it, this will be the first consumer electronics right to repair bill passed anywhere in the USA, but the real fight (with the manufacturers) has only just begun:

Apple and John Deere have been the main instigators of this BS for many years. They are trying to bring hardware purchase inline with the T's and C's in software purchasing - where you aren't buying ownership of the product but the right to use it, subject to certain conditions. The same is being applied to hardware, where you don't own the phone but you own the right t use it - and you can only use it Apple's way.

This is the main (but not the only) reason why I will never throw money on the counter for any Apple product ever. I will never back a product that is made by a company with such a horrendous track record for treating its customer base with contempt.

Any government anywhere that reverses this and overrides any of Apple's restrictions on its products will get my support. To be honest, I don't think much better of Android but at least it is more open and users can replace screens and a few other things on their phones without being held back by money-making cartels.

John Deere is doing what Apple does but with tractors. Why farmers should be hamstrung by John Deere when many of them are quite adept at repairing their own machinery is beyond me. Again, it is a money-making cartel and nothing else.

Apple and John Deere - two companies that clearly do not understand their customers and they are putting electronic serial numbers on parts to make sure that only cartel participants are authorised to repair phones and tractors.

By the way, if you buy spares for an iPhone and the electronic serial number blocks the phone from accepting it, there is no warranty because in Apple's eyes, the part works as intended.

There should be strong laws world wide for this unconscionable behaviour.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

A cousin of mine has spent weeks looking for a new tractor, finally settling for one of the Indian-built machines. When I questioned his decision he stated that although he can afford a JD he decided it isn't worth the emotional torment if something went wrong with the JD and the computer shuts down the power plant and orders him to contact his nearest dealer. (An illegal operation has occurred - contact your nearest accredited dealer)

He is a mechanic, the diesel engine will not present major problems to him and it certainly will not shutdown because a computer tells it to.

I can well relate. My Mazda ute refused to start intermittently. Apparently someone was trying to steal it (bullsh*t; I bench tested three modules controlling the security systems; no faults present) My biggest bugbear was I could not push start the damn thing---fuel shut off compliments of computer.

I wish NY State all the luck in the world. If they succeed the floodgates will open-----can't wait! The bast*rds have been screwing the consumer far to long.

New Apple M2 processor chip has 22 billion transistors! Sounds like they are integrating RAM to avoid outside suppliers?
