There is a video of an R-class Sydney tram doing the rounds in Melbourne on Youtube. The locals seemed to like this model as it has a similar design to Melbourne's W-class. Being a Sydneysider I am obliged to say that the R-class looks better but at the end of the day beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There will no doubt be many loyal to the W-class.

Sadly, because Sydney's new system runs on 750V, the R-class cannot run here, even for a special occasion without some expensive modifications.

In Adelaide the government ripped up all of the tram tracks at the behest of General Motors and Chrysler who were about to invest in huge production plants. They wanted the motor car to be the predominant mode of transport, without competition from public transport.

Ironically General Motors (Kettering) invented the (electric motor) starter.
