I remember the AMPS days and an analogue signal (whilst insecure and subject to being heard by a third party) could travel for 50km quite easily. When I used to camp at Hill End, NSW back in the 1990s the nearest mobile tower was at Orange. Now, there is a smart antenna located in the camp ground on the ablutions block. Smart antennas only work on 3G. We got rid of the nine of these we had where I work and installed a DAS which works on 3G and 4G.

Service hasn't moved with the times. It has gone backwards at an alarming rate. Australia is a first world nation with a sixth world communuications system. CMDA was like AMPS - designed for big countries. Not dozens of little ones like GSM.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Hmmm. I have noticed that MMS messages sent from my Telstra 3G phone are simply not received by Vodafone (aka Vodafail) customers.
