Hi All,

A family member has asked me to repair a broken speaker cable plug from a vintage HiFi unit. One of the pins has come out of the plug.

From what I can see, the plug is an Amphenol 71-4 8-088 4 Pin Speaker Plug. I know Amphenol are still around but was wondering whether they still make these as a web search hasn't brought up anything?

If not, is there a suitable replacement? Or will I have to get a NOS one? Or can they be repaired?

Note that I don't have the plug in front of me at the moment, just working off pictures.

Cheers,

Chris

That style of plug and socket has been obsolete for years.

NOS here: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/402261291559

Or can they be repaired?

I have repaired broken plugs before, but the possibility and viability of doing that depends on the damage. Need some good photos.

If push comes to shove, you could maybe use a standard 8 pin valve socket and make a plug from the base of a dead octal valve. After soldering in the wires, fill the base with black epoxy.

Yes, that's it.

It's the same as a UX 4 pin valve base.

Depending on which pin is broken you can replace it with an M4 or M5 screw.
