I am about to purchase some new capacitors and other components for an old radio. A search of Jaycar (and my junk box) yielded a few caps of the correct value, but their range is limited. A search of this web site's Services Directory was more fruitful eg Evatco.
Where does everyone buy their components from?? I prefer to buy over the counter if at all possible. I am Melbourne based.
Thanks, Ian

I've bought from Jaycar and also Steve Savell's Australian Vintage Wireless (also in the services directory) in the past. You could also try Altronics for browncaps (metallised polyester) for very small capacitance upto 630vw. The closest shop to you would be 891 Princes Highway, Springvale.

Forget Dick Smith Electronics. Woolworths has managed to complete their conversion of Dick Smith into a baby Big W which is great if you want a plasma telly or a laptop but not so great for the hobbyist.

I prefer not to use the red greencaps due to their shape & wire shortness. The axials are a better fit. Most of the supermarkets do not have a full range in Greencaps.

I have not had issues with Evatco.

You may have to consider WES or Willtronics to get 500V Ceramic caps to replace the Siver Mica type as I have not spotted any one here with a full range.

I would also note that Evatco has 2 & 3 Watt resistors, that were hard to find.

Be carefull buying 1/2 Watt & smaller supermarket resistors, most cannot handle the voltage of the HT of valve radio's.

Thanks guys. I live not far from Altronics in Melbourne, so I will visit them and a couple of others in the Services Directory over the next few weeks.
Whilst searching the Services Directory, I noted that two web links were inoperable - Brian Smith, Rockhampton and Direct Components WA.
Cheers, Ian

I think at one stage EVATCO was also the wrong address, as it changed hands.

They are in Rosewood Qld.

Yes I do need to update those links. Brian Smith's website was on his Bigpond webspace and Bigpond trashed all those last year with little warning.

Some time back I seem to remember the owner of EVATCO e-mailing me with updated details. I'll double-check and update again if necessary.

Email is the same

If you search for Electronic Valve And Tube Company, it should show up.

G'day Steve,

Long time, no see. I noticed your caps auctions on Ebay the other day and you have a few that I could definitely use. When I get back to work next week I'll drop you an e-mail. Smile

By the way, as a general announcement to all, the services directory has been updated. Sadly, a few entries had to be removed due to contact details being lost or people have just moved on to other interests.

If any of you know of anyone who are repairers or suppliers of spares, let me know and I'll look into adding them. We still have two or three states with no-one at all.
