I wonder how much of it remains after a century in salt water?

QUOTE: London: Hidden treasures will be taken from inside the wreck of RMS Titanic for the first time after the US government and leading British archaeologists were defeated in a landmark court case.

In an order released on Tuesday, a US judge granted permission for a salvage firm to cut into the vessel and retrieve a Marconi wireless set known as the "voice of Titanic".

It sent out Titanic's frantic distress signals as it sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

"The Marconi has such a great story to tell. It shouldn't be left at the bottom of the ocean, where only scientists can see it. Once the wireless has been brought up and conserved, we plan to use it as part of an educational outreach program in schools. That's the magic sauce - the ability to use the Marconi to bring Titanic to a new generation.

The captain's grog cabinet would be intact.

I doubt if the new generation would even be interested in it at all. It's a very unusual idea they have for it, .

Burntoutelectronics .
Its good to see you have an interest in Electronics,, I'm a friend of Ian's ! I collect only TVS and Radiograms from the late 50s and 60s ,Not interested in the real old stuff .. Ian tells me you have a good mind for Electronics and an interest in vintage TVs . I have about 15 TVs in various stages, They are all pretty original except for two I converted to colour for daughters .... Pete

Hi Pete!

Yes you could say I’ve got a bit of an interest. It’s a shame I don’t know anyone else my age who does!
Especially in vintage equipment.
I’m just lucky I have a dad who could teach me all that I know.
You may remember the Kriesler Super fringe TV I posted about in this forum with a 11-79A chassis that Ian helped me diagnose and fix.
It’s the only valve TV I have but it’s a fantastic set. The only thing that needs doing is a tweak on the geometry of the picture as it’s too far to the left and down a bit but I’m not sure how to calibrate that.
Wow 15 TV’s on the go! I’d struggle to keep track of that!
How many TV’s do you have in your collection? Do you know any good books on how to align the video on a CRT?
Everything but the geometry is off, the linearity is perfect and vertical hold is broad and rock solid.
I’m planning to get a HDMI to composite converter so I could watch movies with my GF on it! (Yes really)
Converted to colour? Do you mean pull the old chassis and crt and replace the insides with a later “plastic fantastic” set?

Lance

Hi Lance!

On the back of the deflection yoke (that's the thing on the neck of the tube) there should be two metal tabs. These are weak magnets. To centre the picture on the screen you rotate these, both relative to each other (to set the strength of the correction) and together (to set the direction of the correction).

On some CRTs, too much correction will de-focus the image and/or cause shading..

Re old movies with the GF, make sure you watch To Kill a Mockingbird and Dr. Strangelove.

Can't imagine there would be anything left of that spark radio. It would have corroded into lumps of useless trash, if indeed there's any remnants at all.

Well, they are going to spend a boatload of money to retrieve it so I guess someone has ascertained that what's still there is worth retrieving. I'll be interested to see what's left of it.

Ah yes Ian I had a sneaking suspicion it may have been those!
but I couldn't be sure and I'm not the type who goes in and screws every pot, nut and bolt until it does something so I left it alone until I knew so thanks again for clearing that up!

haha yes I just searched up Dr. Strangelove and should be a good one!

I should also track down a HD set top box because the only ones I have only receive SD digital TV. not that I plan on using the TV much.
only for special occasions

Yes that's in the top 10 list of the most famous movie scenes of all time.

Some of the lines are priceless, e.g.

"You can't fight in here! This is the war room!"
