One of the issues with Bakelite is that the shiny bit it very thin, therefore the lustre is easily lost. That is why I say keep my brew containing Soda ash away from cabinets. Any Abrasive polish based on Sodium Bi-Carbonate can also bad news if its with Silicone oil. If the Bi Carb gets into the pores, you may have one hell of a job removing it: Once it gets into the pores it also ruins the luster.

Just a question guys. I am trying to make the case of the Astor BPJ really shine. What do you guys use to polish these plastic sets up ?

What do you guys use to polish these plastic sets up ?

My method:

(1) Go over the surface with very fine wet and dry, with two drops of dish washing detergent in the water as lubrication to prevent the grit from digging in. This process removes surface scratching and any chalky/powdery parts from sun fading, etc. You'll end up with a dull surface, but don't be alarmed.

(2) Use the liquid form of Autosol metal polish along with a lot of elbow grease (but not too much pressure! don't want to crack the old plastic), and hand buff with a soft cloth.

You should end up with a mirror shine.

Practise on some junk plastic first, so that you get the hang of it.

That process has turned out surprisingly well. The radio is nearly looking brand new. Well I got another surprise coming. You will see it soon.

The Astor bpj is now complete and it looks magnificent. Photos have been sent. This little set was given to me by a good friend whose mother bought it new.
