Finally got NBN up and running.
Did a self install of a Fiber to the Curb NBN connection device and modem which amazingly connected first time.
Even got all the phones in the house working after sorting out the correct port on the modem.
The instructions said "Connect phones to the PSTN port" which made sense to me, but this didn't work so I connected them to the adjacent RJ45 connector which simply had a picture of a phone above it, and they all sprang to life.
We have been struggling along with a very slow ADSL2 connection which gave speeds of about 3.5meg as we are a good distance from the Telstra exchange, but now I have a very nice 47meg connection (using ookla speed test).
Websites now just pop and downloads happen in seconds not minutes.
I hope it lasts.
I know of many others who have had problems with the NBN but perhaps there is an advantage to having it later rather than earlier as hopefully the bugs have been ironed out.

That's good to hear!
We are waiting for our NBN team to hit Toongabbie in Sydney.
Ii has going to be "next September" for about 5 years...………..
I guess going by your experience they must have it down pat by now.
I'm a Telstra customer so don't expect much trouble....Hah!!
Fred.

We have a fibre to the node which we connected to 12 months ago when it was rolled out. We have had problem free internet & phone ever since and an average speed of ~ 47-48 megs (despite being over 350 m from the cabinet). There are many success stories out there. Our rollover from ADSL to NBN happened seamlessly .. given our modem was ADSL/VDSL. With less than 5 mins down time.

Yeah I,m with Telstra also.
There were cheaper options (by $10 or so per month) but it meant changing my email address which was too painful to consider as it is so embedded these days.
I changed ISP's some years ago and changing the email address went on for months.
There is always one more company that you've missed updating.

Very true. My current ISP offers an email address only option for $25 a year, but my guess is I'd be whistling Dixie if I needed any sort of support.

Yeah...Email Addresses.

I had to change my Email address to the new ISP and catching up with all those sites who have my Email info has been laborious but worth it in the end as some individuals & groups whom I did not really want any further contact with did not get advised of the change.

Thus once the old Email subscription ends stuff addressed to me will no longer get through. Unsubscribing does not always get rid of them as many on-sell your Email from their list to others when you do Unsubscribe.

For us the NBN switchover has been good as we get what speeds they advertise and we pay for and the Call Centre is brilliant. Cannot ask for more than that.

Lindsay

I've been lucky so far - in the age of e-mail addresses being used for verification, I've owned a few domains over the years and simply use those for what is needed. No matter the host, the domain is mine and can be used. The trick is that one has to remember to renew the domain licence every two years or the domain can end up in the hands of monetisation companies - companies who buy expired domains and then charge a fortune to hand them back - entirely legal in most cases unfortunately.

In this day and age with the liks of Outlook.com, Gmail and all the others, I dont see the point of ISP issued email addresses.
They are a throwback from the past before these platforms existed, and really make it a pain to switch Internet providers.

Given most providers offer no-commitment internet connections, you're free to hop about at any time. This is a good thing because it keeps everyone in check knowing you could jump ship if your incumbent provider becomes a pain.

There's a reason why a lot of people still use their ISP e-mail addresses. One is the reason outlined above. Moving from the ISP to a free e-mail even once is still once too many for some. When ISPs are taken over by others, the buyer usually preserves the old domains so that people are not inconvenienced.

Another reason, and this is a biggie for me, is that webmail isn't as good, or as quick, as Outlook (or other on-board e-mail programmes. For the foreseeable future, using my own situation as an example, I receive hundreds of photos from users each year for publication here as I do not have the time to complete the image upload feature that I have been working on. Because of that I need Outlook to stop me pulling my hair out at the lack of ergonomics and speed on webmail. I also do not want to become one of Google's advertising pawns and believe in the old fashioned value that e-mail should be free. Free of charge and free of advertising.

With regard to uploading photos, many have been sent in this weekend. I was at the Melbourne auction and have just arrived back in Sydney so these will go up tonight, hopefully.

True, but there are still some sites that refuse to register gmail or hotmail type addresses on the basis that they are often used by trolls/scammers.

First up. sorry Brad for sending another copy of photos to upload, thought I had a problem with my email when sending the first one.
Like Brad I have my own domain names and server and my email address I use is linked to one of these.
Also have another I created at mail.com.

It was a rule here too for a good few years. It was only relaxed when Google decided to do something about all the spammers signing up to their service.

NBN website is using American Spelling! - ("Curb" vs "Kerb")
- Not setting a good example for a Quango -

I attacked them for that right from the outset. It's a complete disgrace, like the rest of the NBN.

I guess their compromise is that they are using 'fibre' not 'fiber'.
