My Emtec 32 GB flash drive accidentally swam through a full (cold) wash cycle today and somehow survived the ordeal.

Been there done that with same brand: A lot of those zips are actually sealed & water proof. Probably to survive sweaty pockets & various other methods people use to try to drown & kill them.

Its normally only some people that can be brainwashed using just a light rinse.

Newly assembled SMD PCBs are washed in water (in a dishwasher actually!) at our contract assembler.
So that does not surprise me at all.

What often breaks electronics is gunk gets washed under a crystal, stays damp and stops or shifts the oscillator.
