Bad explanation: Those 3/16 beads were actually the rubber insulation that had cracked into a chain of beads . It beggars belief that some Turkey would plug it in: Yet alone power it.

Yep, that cord should have beet cut off immediately.

I've mentioned here before that the rubber insulated wire used under the chassis by Airzone in the late 1940s, certainly on the 5A1A2 model (example in my avatar), perished in different patterns depending on the colour.
