Is there much interest in repairing old car radios from around late 1930's to mid 1960?
I have a few and having run out of other radios to repair have dragged them out of the shed either to repair or give away. One in particular is probably only good for parts. It is a very old Tasma that had the remote cable drive which I do not have. I have an interest in old cars not that my current 1969 Hillman is very classic however it is my daily driver and I can't afford anything more classic. I still attend car shows and most have modern radios tucked away or installed in the open which I think spoils the vehicle however I understand why.
Is there any market for these in going order? Perhaps I should just sit and stare at the ceiling.

If you search eBay on terms like "early holden radio" you'll find a wide range of asking prices. However, most on offer are from the transistor era.

Some items are in perpetual demand. For instance, any radio branded "Brock" fetches a premium in the Holden market.

I don't touch car radios myself. I am not fond of working in confined spaces where you have to remove 2 or 3 components to get to the one that you want to deal with.

A colleague of mine who does auto electrical work on prestige cars sometimes gets this type of work in for vintage/veteran vehicles where the requirement is to preserve the original equipment.

In summary, I don't know of any ready-made market for them across the board. More an individual want thing. What brands/models do you have in your pile?

I need to check there is at least one Tasma one Kriesler one out of a Rambler not sure of brand.
I agree with you they are a pig to work on, the scrap metal bin is looking good. They are also heavy so which makes them expensive to courier.

I used to work on many, but the major problem was always, Knobs, can't get.
Escutcheon, can't get. dial, can't get. Controls with bent shafts.
It is all the things that one can't get that is the problem. Not the diagnosis.

Frankly, if it is not complete, I consider it as a project that can not be finished.

Thank you for your reply. You will find my reply a little strange. This is a unique opportunity to have some of your old car radios back! Many years ago I bought a couple of these off you on ebay and I picked them up from you, and you gave me quite a few more. Some I used the rest I stuck in the shed till the other day. To give you an idea how long ago this was, you had an FB or EK Holden I think it may have been pink and white or yellow and white. I may have turned up in an old Rover, my wife Robin came up with me. It is only recently that I realised that you are a forum member. I should have emailed you and said gooday. My initial reason for acquiring these old car radios was to get them back into older cars. However I found generally no one wanted them back in their cars, which to a degree I can understand because of the diminishing use of AM radio stations and their large bulky size most are now regarded as useless unless they were specifically made for a now popular classic car. The general generic ones there is little calling for. I am basically rationalising my radios. All the other radios I have are now all complete and working except for two burnt out shells which have some useful bits. Which left the next stage which was car radios in shed. If anyone reading this has an interest in them let me know. Some are very heavy and courier costs would far out weigh their worth which would mean local pick up from Kanahooka a Wollongong suburb NSW. My email is open.

I have fixed a couple of old car radios .... mainly mid 1960's .... specific radios for specific cars .... and as Wayne said, they had to be complete.

Recently, I fixed a VW radio for a friend. It had been quite a search to find the correct radio for the car ... originality and completeness were the key. It came from a 'graveyard' of VW's ......... some members may remember my Post about this a year ago.

Now working again properly ... an easy 'fix' .... caps only ..... and in the process of being installed in car.

Thank you for your reply I am currently going through them. I will be listing them in the for sales. They will all be for free. However the weight will make them only suitable for local pick up NSW Illawarra region.
