OK, if the AGC goes LESS negative and the set gets louder, something is leaking it away.

Check the voltage at the diode load (volume pot end to end?). If it's much MORE negative than the AGC line, you have a leak. Obvious candidate is a paper cap. But it could also be one of the valves on the AGC line drawing a little grid current.

If the cap is OK (read "new"), well, that's all that's left. A bit of gas in a valve will sometimes do this.

The shields all tested ok.

Will try to get a 6J8G.

All caps in the AGC have been changed.
