You need 2 D cells in place, otherwise the holder shorts out. Sometimes corrosion causes a short to ground on the insulated contacts.

8 x 9v 216 alkalines can be clipped together directly like Lego to make a 72 volt battery that can be taped up and fits neatly in the original B battery holder. You'll need to change the clips though.

I have a couple of these little not-very-rare AWAs. One of them gets used most mornings during breakfast, ALDI alkaline pack as described will run it for a couple of years at 20 - 30 mins a day. Not expensive.

If you'd like to get it going and you live close or can pack it well, I'd be more that happy to oblige.
