Very sad for those of us who remember Manly Fun pier!
And now the Aquarium has closed its doors for the last time.
After 55 years.
I have memories of both these places ,because as a very young boy I lived at Manly Lodge. My mum use to run the lodge so I would ride my bike down to the fun pier and hang around for hours and the Aquarium too. Now I have a young daughter who loves to go there!
Both these places are Icons!
Sad to see them go, I'm sure many here have memories there too.
I use wait for the ferry to come in and jump off the wharf into the ferry waves. We lost the fun pier to a storm long ago
I lived there in 1970s
Pete

At present Non-Residential:
"If an application was lodged to change the zoning, Council is required by legislation to consider the application. Any application to change the zoning would be a matter for the elected Council to consider and determine."

I'm sure that with sufficient 'discreet pecuniary encouragement' Wink councilmen can be persuaded to soften their stance.

Would those who do not know Manly please indulge Vintage Pete and myself in our reminiscences?

Yes Pete, Manly now is just a very pale shell shell of its previous glory. I lived there as a child in the 1950s attending the original Manly Primary School, now demolished. Left in 1961 but was back in 1973 as a gunner at the School of Artillery on North Head. Ah the joys of going jogging past the Cardinals Palace and the Manly Hospital and breathing in the fragrant aroma from Bluefish Point (the sewerage plant for North Sydney). The old Norfolk pines were still lining the beaches before the pollution killed them and the Corso with its old buildings and grand picture theatres had not been 'improved' out of existence. I knew the old pier and bathes had gone but I had not heard about the aquarium. LJ Hooker (real estate developer) has been pushing to build all the way up to and on North Head since the 1960s so I doubt that the area from the pier around to the old Quarantine Station will last very long.

Andrew

QUOTE: Would those who do not know Manly please...[not post]

But I do know Manly (have taken ferry there numerous times, as far back as 1961.)
