Hello Clive.
Its amazing when I see these old clips, how much Australia has change in a relative short time, we don't notice it until we see a old clip or film and yes the Seekers had talent. They were very good at creating music with emotions.
Great old Train too!

Pete

It is Puffing Billy.

But the train that runs out along the Mornington Peninsula that inspired the song isn't, I'm told.

But the train that runs out along the Mornington Peninsula that inspired the song isn't, I'm told.

All bound for Mornington, many miles away.

When I was a young child that's exactly what I thought it said.

I met Bruce Woodley many years ago when I did some work for him. When I first went around to his house I had no idea who he was, though he looked familiar. I asked my boss later who he was and he just laughed. The next time I went to Bruce's house there was no doubt as to who he was. There were gold records and a picture of the Seekers meeting the Queen on the floor leaning up against the wall .

I think the song goes Morning Town . Not Mornington.

The first album I ever bought was by the Seekers. They made a bigger impression on me at the time than the Beatles.
Still got it buried in a box somewhere - it is mono.

Yes I know the song is called Morning Town Ride.

Maybe I worded it wrong. When I was a very young child I thought they were saying Mornington, not Morning Town. You know how you children are with songs on the radio: We my parents were in their late teens it was Herman’s Hermits, She’s A Must To Avoid to She’s A Muscular Boy. My little sister used to think Billy Oceans, When The Going Gets Tough was Go And Get Stuffed!

Yes lip stick on your collar was often mistaken too! People get the words mixed up.

I'm a big 50s 60s music Fan, But I'm not a Beatles Fan at all really.
In fact the covers that the Beatles did do that I liked were, Please Mr Post Man and Roll over Beethoven , which I'm sure you all know are not written by the Beatles.
This Era had many great Bands and Artists that were often over shadowed by the Beatles mania.
Australia had many fine Artists of that time and so did the UK .
Some of the French pop songs from the late 50s to late 60s were fantastic.
If I was able to go back in time too the 60s and see some of these Bands, The Beatles would not be on the Top of my list .
What the Beatles mania did do very well was inspire other bands and artists to get out there and have a go!
So we ended up with many great songs from that Era.

Pete

Great song. When I started primary school my teacher used to play it for us on one of those little Kriesler suitcase record players!

The song Our Lips Are Sealed was often misheard as Alex the Seal.

What with references to Kriesler suitcase record players and the Seekers, this is becoming a real trip down memory lane.

I never had any musical talent but building valve guitar amps for those who fancied they did was a nice little earner in the late 1960s. While at high school I used to make up kits for budding Jimmi Hendrixes with a small profit but at much less than than a factory made unit would have cost them. I used to borrow records to make up dance party tapes on the old 7 inch reel-to-reel machines too.

A friend from those days lived in the same block of flats where Judith Durham lived in recent times and got to know her well. He tells me that Judith's health has failed and she in now in a nursing home. Such a pity that her wonderful singing voice will not be heard anymore.
