Hello all,
Some of the older folk here would know exactly who I was referring too, If I mentioned the name Josephine Baker!
But sadly many people dont know who josephine Baker was or the amazing life she lived as a

Singer,
Dancer,
movie star ,
ww2 spy for the french resistance ,
An Activist,
A French Icon
A Red cross nurse ww2
Decorated with military Honors and after achieving all of this ! She then adopts 12 children of all different nationalities and countries and raised them !!!

Now take a minute to get your mind around that list! This is one outstanding woman! Not really what you could call a couch potato is she !!! Gosh

Josephine Baker was born in St Louis Missouri in 1906 into a very poor African-American family.
It is said ,That as young child she witnessed the klu klux klan at work as they went on a rampage burning houses etc etc.
By the age of 12 she had left school and worked as a servent girl and she had also lived on the street, living off garbage in her childhood . Then by 15 she was married.
Not really what you would call a lucky start in life either is it??
I first heard of this lady about 15 years ago when I bought some 1930s framed prints to sell.
When I took the prints home ,my dear old mum told me who it was and so I looked into history a little to learn more about the prints I had bought.
I dont have the prints anymore . I sold them at Gavans Art Auction years ago.
But a few years ago I did buy 2 Art Deco Josephine Baker Statues that are Napkin holders . One I kept and the other I sold on the net too an American buyer who paid me just over $300 for it.
The Americans and the French have many baker collectors , but not so much here in the land of down and under.
The statues are brass or some are bronze, now depending who you speak to in the Antique circles , there are some discrepancies if it is in fact Baker, but mostly it is excepted that it is Josephine Baker.
Anyway if you like the 20s 30s and music or just a great life story ,,,ive left a link here to a couple of documentaries that you may find interesting.

Don't mention the infamous Banana Dress dance where the bananas were peeled off as the lights were dimmed; apparently the act went down very well with French audiences!
