I would disagree on the valves from around the mid thirties onward. It had a lot to do with how they were built & aligned. I refurbished an AWA that was 1930's and was a "factory special" based in part on an R301. It has a 6D6 RF stage before the 6A7. Strangely it had a DX switch as well as delayed AGC. In broad daylight that had to have the DX switch on the mid setting for a radio station abt 80 Km away (66ft antenna). I have seen very few radios that can get close to it for performance and also rare in that at full volume no signal, no hum. The greatest killer of performance, or cause of deaf sets is poor alignment. Too much input signal, causing the AGC to cut in, being one of the prime ways of getting it wrong. Using equipment that is substantially out of calibration is also of little help. As pointed out in Dec Silicon Chip. It is not at all unusual for a set of some age, to drift off frequency for a variety of reasons: The one presented was well and truly out of calibration. As noted the antenna coil had moved on the rod, for starters: Coils can change with age & I have seen a few plastic formers decomposing. Marc

Well, Classic Rock Radio went down the drain recently. 1377 turned into a sports station calling itself 1116 SEN SPORTS, so that is the end of a great musical time. Also, the online Classic Rock Radio requires that you sign up or you can only listen for 30 minutes. EDIT: that turned out to be a lie, all I got was 2 songs before getting cut off. They've done a good job of pushing listeners to other online stations. So, what other good stations are left on the AM dial? One is Forever Classic 2GN on 1368, but it can be difficult to hear even though it isn't far away. I've heard good things about 2CA, but it gets completely wiped out by another station at night. What else is left ?

Been away for awhile ... so out in my Garage yesterday I was wondering why the tuning had changed on my radio ... sports not Classic Rock ... so I guess I don't have to pull it down and fix it after all .....
