That valve combination does not appear in AORSM until 1953 in a "A120" which means that the missing converter is most likely 6AN7

This radio is one that I restored back when I first started collecting - I think I bought it in 1990. Back then I didn't think much of the consequences of washing the markings off valves though I certainly do now.

Thanks for the information Marc. I'll see if I have a 6AN7 and then do a visual comparison with the existing unmarked valve. Hopefully you are right - it will solve the mystery once and for all. Approve

You may be lucky & find the chassis number or someone may have a radio that can confirm all of this.

It is unfortunate that many valves were made with numbers that came off virtually when touched.

If its a bakelite socket you can sribe the number on the base, before cleaning. A paint type pen (stationery supplier) is a must.

To get rid of Silver tracking & mouse grime I often Acid wash the minatures. One at a time, so I know which one I have got, when the number comes off. Then you write it back on with the paint pen.

G'day again Marc,

The mystery looks like it is solved. After digging through my Philips valves I found a 6AN7 and compared it to the unmarked one inside the radio and both are the same.

Thankyou for your input - it solves my little problem of having incomplete information in the Radio of the Week segment. Cool
