Hi all.

I've been given an old valve radiogram and I've got an urge to refurbish it. There is no plaque on the inside with model number etc, only remnants of it. I'll put some pics up and maybe pick some brains. As far as I can tell so-far it powers up, light comes on on the radio, the turntable spins, speed selection is good. The arm won't come accross and play a record though, it comes up, rattles a bit then goes down. I'm a long time vinyl enthusiast but I've never owned anything this old, so any help and guidance would be appreciated. It does seem to be in pretty good order.

Cheers

Steve

Eek, there was a part of me that thought maybe I shouldn't, but I did. Probably a daft chance to take I suppose. First lesson learnt, could've been a heap worse.

There are very good reasons not to power up such vintage equipment. Doing so can result in irreparable and totally avoidable damage.

In order to try to identify the model, let us know the type numbers on the valves. If they are too dusty to read, then dust them very gently with a light tissue or an artist's brush so as not to erase the soft printing.

Hi

Get a mirror as the model number will be on the back (Bottom face when in the cabinet) of the chassis.

Dont plug it in again!

Maybe we need a page with the warnings of plugging in for all who visit this site which is removed when you register as a member.

Just a thought

There is similar chassis on ebay at the moment.

Nothing should disappear on sign-up. There is a warning about plugging in any old appliance at the bottom of every page here in big bright red lettering. A similar warning exists on the British VR forums. The problem is that people tend to plug things in before visiting a site that has the warnings.

There is also a page labelled "Safety Warning" linked from the main toolbar which, whilst not an exhaustive article, does explain things in a little more detail. This is one of few pages here that survive from the original site launched in 2003.

... and I did advise against it in my reply to his introductory post.

Maybe 'dodged a bullet' this time.

Well spotted Clive.

Seems it's a chassis type 32 (or close relative), in which case the valve line-up should be: 6BE6, 6BA6, 6AV6, 6M5, 6X4.

Similar but not quite the same.... Check the location of the Rectifier. Very possible that it is a 32 series.

Still awaiting the information from the mirror and that will sort it.

Maybe I did not explain myself correctly.

I was thinking of a page that came up with only the warning on. This page would be the first thing anyone other than a member would see when accessing the site.

Something short and sweet in bright colour, a 2 second read, so they read it before bypassing it.

All existing warning information would stay as is.

Anyhow just a thought.

Hi guys, sorry about the wait for info, new years and all that.

I've got some info but not too sure what help it will be but here goes.

The bottom left valve is a 6BA6, bottom right looks like a AMS smudge, the one immediately above the right hand capacitor(condensers back in the day?) looks like AMSF.

The transformer on the right hand side has the number 9040004 on it and the top black component has 9050023 on it.

The chassis number is 237160, stamped in the frame

In my defence I switched it on before I found this forum, certainly not since with the warnings, it also appears to have the original plug on it.

Like I say I have zero experience with valve amps, indeed I haven't played with any electronics for many years, so don't be surprised if I sound puzzled now and then.

If it's more helpful I can label the photo and re-post.

Cheers

Steve

The valve types are usually the best help in chassis identification. I have listed the likely ones in post #10 above.

A pop-up screen with the warning is not a bad idea, for both visitors and new members.
