"It’s quite a sight to herald the arrival of a lifesaving doctor: 30 flaming rolls of toilet paper.
In the vast, dusty rangelands of northern Australia, emergency medical help has to travel by airplane. For Geoff Cobden, a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, that often means a nighttime landing or takeoff from the rough, packed-dirt airstrip of a cattle station. To make the strip visible in the dark, the station can usually set out flares — but what if the flare supply runs out?

“It doesn’t happen often, but when there’s no flares, we set fire to dunny rolls,” said Mr. Cobden, 51, using the bush vernacular for toilet paper."

Australia is the land of improvisation. When something doesn't work, one makes it work. Smile

Hope they do not use up all their dunny rolls as flares and have some left over for the intended usage.

Dunny rolls (toilet paper) when soaked in kerosene make good campfire lighters in wet weather.

We could also hark back to the 1930's air race from England when the DC2 "Uiver got lost in a storm near Albury NSW.

In Albury they sent out AU in Morse by turning the towns lights on & off. Meanwhile 2CO's local announcer cut of the feed and started advertising for cars to use their lights to make a runway on the Racecourse.

Now that's improvising: It worked.
