Over the past few days a new fault has made its presence felt, returning a 500 Error for visitors. To date I have been unable to find the cause but will continue to work on it as time allows until the fault can be found and fixed.

This only affects the main site, so if you find the site unreachable for this reason you can still access the old site located at http://narrow.vintage-radio.com.au/ which appears to remain unaffected by whatever issue is present here.

You may have to log in again, with the same username and password you use here.

Brad, I have also noticed in the last few days that when I restart Firefox I am not automatically logged in, as has always been the case in the past. Perhaps that's germane to the problem?

Hi Brad.

Firstly, speaking for myself, and I am sure, a lot of others, we are cool with it. For the cost to us it's worth its weight in gold!

Secondly, a BIG thanks for your efforts. I know the amount of energy a site like this takes, and to have a problem crop up, especially if the cause is not known, can be really frustrating.

So, thanks mate, I really appreciate it!

jeff

I reckon there is some good news tonight, well actually as of late last night. I was reading back through maintenance logs and found that we had the same problem last year and there was no way to diagnose it. Anyway, after doing some experimenting I found that the problem was caused by the function that lets members who are signed in see who was on the site in the last 24 hours - a function that is available on many brands of forum software.

Anyway, last night I turned that function off and not only hasn't the site timed out since then but it is working a bit faster. So for the time being I will leave it turned off and see how things go. I am working weekends for the next three weeks but will try and find time to created a new table in the database to support the function and then turn it back on. I think the problem has been caused by the current table just getting too big. At the moment though, having a working website is the to priority.

GTC: I doubt the problem you suffered was directly as a result though if it was then perhaps the slow response times leading up to the crashing of the site may have been a possible cause. If so then things should be right now.
