Around 1973-74 my parents bought a Canberra Television twin speaker it only had a volume and picture controls I think it was the last of the valve black and white televisons before colour was introduced on first of March the channel dial only went up to 5A even though it was branded by that name I was wondering who was the manufacture who made them.

I remember the TV jingle well as a kid in the 70's: " Nobody Can Like Canberra Can"

Canberra Television was a TV rental company and I believe their sets were made by Thorn. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

UPDATE: Just found this.

I remember the Canberra Television store on Parramatta Road near Old Canterbury Road, in either Petersham or Lewisham. The shop was packed to the gunwales with Thorn tellies, all made (I believe) at AWA's Rydalmere factory. These models, the 53T1 and 63T1 were available in teak or walnut cabinets with either a matching timber grain on the front panel or a combo of chrome and satin chrome finish. They had a Mitsubishi chassis and were probably the most reliable television ever made, due to their simplicity. Looking inside one and seeing the lack of wiring and circuitry it was easy to wonder why they performed the same functions as more complex televisions like Rank Arena and Philips with up to a dozen circuit boards in them, all connected with wiring looms that looked like they were borrowed from an electric train.

My parents had the AWA version, purchased new in 1982 and it went without missing a beat for nearly 30 years when it developed a picture alignment issue which was cured by an upgrade to a digital television. I had the Thorn version for about 12 years and it was still working when replaced with a digital television in 2010.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Does anyone remember the early sixties Thorn TV model that went in the corner of the room? It was a cool idea as it made for an apparent slimline cabinet (concealing the projecting picture tube neck into the room's corner.) Suspect they were a knockdown of a British design, but may have been scratch built in Aus?

In Britain back then people, as a rule, rented. They thought Australians would go for that also. Today the UK TV licence costs more than a TV: another raw deal Aussies didn't go for.
