I've pondered on a trick to 301 redirect users from default.asp to home.asp but I admit I don't know the answer myself yet.

The webhost will not change the order of default files to suit the current structure of the site - all non-forum parts of the site are now in .NET rather than Classic ASP. so I'm stuck there. In time, the search engines will adjust to how things are but for now, yes, to those who don't know the site, it's a guessing game for them unfortunately.

Fred, all the images show for me, though I am using Edge. I didn't realise Outlook could be used as a web browser, or do you mean Internet Explorer?

Hi Brad, sorry, yes I meant Edge or whatever they call it now, that is the default browser on W10 when you click on the "Explorer" button in the tray.
The effect is not consistent over the 3 PC's I use, just to make it harder to understand!.
I'm realising that I see it mostly when I use a laptop W10 Samsung with a internet dongle, then on some of the older linked articles there are blank spaces. If I immediately swap to chrome on the same laptop the pix are there on the same article.
I had noted the same effect last year so its nothing to do with the current server change its some wibbly wobbly thing to do at my end I think.
Its also not a real problem, 1/ If it happens I just swap to chrome and 2/ nobody else is affected.

Why not just set Chrome or Firefox as your default browser?

I won't use Chrome due to privacy issues. As a browser it's fine but there's a reason it's free. It's Google's data mine. Firefox is also okay but takes about ten years to boot up. Internet Explorer is a very old browser now, with the last version being released nearly 20 years ago. Safari (for Windows) is not a good browser because font rendition is very poor in it. Opera just plain ain't popular. Not sure why. People were probably turned off initially because it was shareware and cost $20 to use permanently. It pioneered browsing tabs but did very little else that was new. I just stick with Edge. It was made for Windows and works well. That said, it's not perfect either because it is susceptible to Microsoft's intrusive updates scheme.

GTC, combination of lazy, when some robot updates W10 the default invariably gets reset to IE , this odd thing only affected stuff from the VR site and , lazy......oh I said that first...……….and when I use firefox or chrome as default then there is always a problem with some other web site somewhere being a bank or some government thing so I just leave it on IE .Smile.

One of the reasons I stick with Win 7 is Microsfoft's Win 10 dictatorial upgrades. For those who may want to tell MS what to do with Edge:

I have no real issues with FF. I only use Chrome if I need to. I tried Opera years ago but it was behind the action and failed to render many sites properly so I tossed it.

When I was using Windows 7 I completely disabled updates as most of them just changed one version of spyware for another.
Gave up using Windows completely when I reloaded my laptop from the original disc and their spyware told me I din't have a valid copy of windows and blacked my desktop. I have been using Ubuntu since then, works better and more reliable and no virus problems. I use Libre Office, find it even better than Open Office. I only use FF browser even for web site development work.
My partner was using Outlook on her desktop and laptop and it just stopped working, would load them just shut down, so I loaded Thunderbird mail client and imported everything from Outlook.

Does Windows 7 still nag you to upgrade with that annoying widget MS spread to everyone like a virus way back when...?

Most corporate environments managed to keep it out because of volume licencing and extended support but the common man wasn't so lucky.

Win 7 periodically pops up message from the taskbar saying there are upgrades available, which I ignore. I'm not familiar with a 'widget' for that.

XP used to pop up annoying messages about upgrades being available that was based on some sort of timer (even offline PCs got the message), but I ran a utility that shut down the process behind it, thus silencing it.

Whilst I find Windows 10 quite reliable, I liked Windows 7's interface a lot better. I don't like the flat, untactile look of it now.

When I first tried to use a mate's brand new PC with Win 8 on it, I told him to take it back and get Win 7 installed. The absolute arrogance of the (since fired) MS management trying to force a tablet interface on everyone still astounds me. That's one plan I believe that Gates would kiboshed had he still been in charge. I'm sure he would have insisted on an either-or interface based on user choice, or possibly using keyboard detection.

I'm using Win7 for everything, and there's no popups or annoying stuff. Whenever windows updates come along I will promptly install them. It all seems to work perfectly well. I'm using the latest version of Firefox, which also works perfectly well, except for one forum (not this one).

Since the switch to the new server there's been no issue at all. Not a single error 500 or freezing.

I don't like the look of Windows 10, although it does work after a fashion.

On this Win7 I use Firefox for everything except for banking as it won't allow the banking app to start, so I have to use IE 11 for that. IE 11 came out in 2013 btw, so 5 years ago (not 20 !!).

Remember when that world-wide ransomware attack happened? It was because people didn't bother getting the latest windows updates installed. Microsoft had already patched it 2 months before the attack happened.

Please don't suggest I switch to Unix. I don't understand it, and at my age, I don't want to.

My Win 7 updates at reboot time. I don't want updates running when I'm using the PC.

Unix-like operating systems are many and varied though I've only ever used them for servers, not terminals. Once you learn to drive it is just too hard to change and I don't have the time in my life to scratch my backside let alone get used to a new way of computing.

FreeBSD and OpenBSD were great for running IRC and name servers back when I didn't have spare cash for hosting these services on more powerful machines. A Unix command line runs on the smell of an oily rag, as does DOS. More services were made for Unix though and because it was passworded it could be made more secure. DOS just boots up and lets anyone do anything they want.

It's been a long time though, and I have forgotten most of the handy commands commonly used for compiling and installing services on FreeBSD.

I find using Ubuntu Linux just as easy as Windows 7 and much easier to use that any of the later versions of Windows.
I'm using Ubuntu 18.04, if you need to add a printer or some other device, you pug it in and it is installed and notifies you its ready to use..
I was trying Linux years ago and found it difficult to install and use but later versions have a similar interface to Windows and Mac.
Not trying to convert anyone just stating my experiences.
