Meanwhile there was a brilliant flash as an incandescent light globe violently exploded in the kitchen, leaving glass fragments all over the floor. All that was left in the socket was the base and part of a wire. I replaced it with a CF but it keeps flickering. Seems to be an issue somewhere.

So, still 7 ordinary incandescents in use here, plus the 3 candle-shaped ones. I've run out of the bulbs they use these days.

I've experienced that a few times over the years. There's discussion here somewhere about fuses within incandescents to inhibit that behaviour.

Flickering may be caused by a poor connection. If more than one light is flickering it could be a poor mains neutral connection, which is a dangerous situation often accompanied by a tingling feeling on taps and pipework.
