Has anybody lost their photos on this site yet?

Very early in the peace I lost a few posts I'd made on the former front page forums due to cutting and pasting between the database and Excel as a method of shifting things around. Needless to say I have not done that since.

I'm pleased to announce though that no linked content, such as photos and circuit diagrams, has ever gone missing here. I have a good backups system in place and it gets kept to.

Some years ago I did have a disc failure, which I mentioned in another thread a couple of weeks ago. Because the server had two discs in a RAID array it was a matter of just hot-swapping the dead disc for a good one. The second disc wrote itself back to the new one and the job was done.

A few years before that I had another disc failure. It was on a server with only one disc. It took a few days to replace the disc, load Windows and the other much-needed applications, followed by the database and linked content. The site was a little smaller back then (okay, a lot smaller!) so the repair job was easier but I think only three posts were lost as they were posted between the time of the last backup and the failure. The members concerned had remembered what they'd said and they re-added the posts as best they could.

Thank goodness I gave up on Photobucket before this happened! It was fine for a while, but eventually it became too slow and difficult for me to use. I tried it again about three months ago and it didn't work at all. It's much easier to email images to forum administrators when you really need to show a picture of something.

And I notice my avatar's disappeared!

ive taken my account to Imgur!

As have many of us. Trouble is, imgur may eventually go the fee for display route too, though I doubt anyone else would be stupid enough to use the same hijack and ransom tactic.

In order to not loose stuff in the cloud, or have it tipped out of the bucket, etc. Perhaps a radical approach is to put them on something like a Seagate & store them in a fire proof cabinet. That way, if they clam up on them, you win they loose as you still have them.

Anyone who relies on the cloud for storage of original images is a gambler.

As I said above, I only use it to share copies of images. The originals are on my backed up disc.

That is probably a very true statement. I'd imagine that in an official sense, most would have a backup routine in place but in the contractual fineprint the usual BS would apply - all care taken but no responsibility accepted.

Anyone wanting to find a place for their avatar has a couple of good options.

1. If you are only a member of this forum, simply send me the 80x80 image and I'll upload it and then apply the correct link text to your avatar settings.
2. If you are a member of several forums and want to use the same avatar everywhere then use the Gravatar service. It's free and all good forums (including this one) support it. Providing you use the same e-mail address to register at Gravatar as you do on the forums you are a member of then Gravatar will work automatically. You don't need to apply any settings on the forums you are a member of.

Interesting: I only use the same Avatar on two radio forums: Nowhere else.
