Woodworking is quite popular, and there is quite a bit of activity.

Where there is large activity and a dollar to be made, there will be suppliers. The WEB may have some, but there are now Woodworking shows in a similar manner to car swap meets & Agricultural field days.

That may be the place to be, to find a supplier, that has the veneer you want.

Yes, I joined http://www.woodworkforums.com/ and consulted them. One member even sent me some sheets of veneer gratis! But these didn't match.

However on disassembling the radio, found the missing piece between the front of the radio and the chassis where presumably the previous owner had put it.
So to avoid the veneer matching problem decided to refit the piece with reinforcement of thin sheet stainless steel epoxied on the back. Looks quite OK but haven't had time to progress it beyond that.

Ricketts and Thorpe used labels like this though they were transfers instead of paper - similar to ARTS&P labels and the old car rego labels.

I am sure Beale also used labels though I don't remember the material used.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...
