Forgot to mention ....Make sure Megger does not exeed the rated voltage of the caps.

Also do not use modern half watt (or lower) supermarket resistors on HT they will not withstand the Voltage.

I use 1 watt most of the time (unless circuit requires bigger). You can interogate the supplier as to their voltage rating. No answer no buy.

talked to my electrician mate today, he has an analogue megger he can lend me, this model:

He also offered his Fluke mutli that measure capacitor value (in nF), so between the two I should be able to determine what's to stay and go.

Will investigate resistors, do you replace all carbon comps with metal film, or carbon film resistors?

And what caps do you use? I have access locally to Jaycar, I've bought overseas from Futurelec, Small bear for my guitar amp stuff with good results, and the obvious ones like Evatco.

I tend to use the yellow axials that EVATCO have. Themain advantage of these is that they are axial (the same as the papers) albiet often smaller. The "red" greencaps often have the problem of the leads being too short.

If you are fixing valve radio's I tend to buy only 1 Watt resistors & 630V caps for them (cuts down the inventory).

If you are going to replace all of the resistors just buy all of the one type as that will look neater. In that set I doubt that there will be an issue with either resistor

With a 5Y3 I would tend to use 500V Sprague Atoms on the HT. Some suppliers seem pricey on these, however I find them to have better performance. EVATCO Now sell resistors particularly of interest is the 2 to 3 Watt range. They also have the cloth covered wire if it has that and you wish to replace with something that is more "in era"

With Electrolytics, the newer ones are not so bad, but stay close to the specified values. If the electrolytic is too high in voltage, the old ones in particular lost
polarity and could become a problem.
