A lot of systems, particularly in the industrial space were not in need of an upgrade. We heard constant reminders in the lead up that everything from cars to lifts to toasters would not operate after the 1st January, 2000 and none of that fear-mongering had any substance. Yes some things required an upgrade but others didn't. Indeed, there were a few things that did not need an upgrade that also could not - which meant that if such a piece of equipment became inoperable, it had to be chucked.

At the time, I was on a steering committee for the millenium bug. At most of the meetings I almost fell asleep.

Tens of millions of home computers were thrown on the tip well before their time because of the fear campaign.

The mass media loves to create hysteria, and there was no shortage of self-declared experts feeding it. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, those in the know were addressing the issue.

This is interesting, confirms what I'd heard, that these originated in the Depression. It appears they are now treated as a novelty by the young affluent and for photo-ops by celebrities!

Things could come full circle, once again becoming a necessity as hard times return?
