I’m looking for a old beat up or disused valve radio as a project for the school holidays.
It really doesn’t have to be fancy!
It can be really anything as long as it’s not too major like a shorted mains transformer.

I have a couple of very badly beaten up plastic late 50's Admirals you can have. These are unusual as they use printed circuit boards.

Us southerners have also been referred to as Wet Backs. Back in the pre-federation days there were plenty of illicit Murray River crossings to evade paying custom duties.

Strongly suggest that you join the HRSA. Once meetings are allowed again, you will meet like-minded people and I'm pretty sure they'll have such radios or know where to get them. Additionally, the quarterly magazine Radio Waves is a always a good read and it contains a large classified ads section.

(Not sure how they operate in Melbourne, but in Sydney, stuff not considered fit for sale at auction is left in a freebee pile outside the meeting hall.)

Sorry Lance I can't help out, All my stuff is TVs , Radiograms ,I actually don't collect Radios apart from the early 60s Transistors I have .
But I'm sure someone here will dig around in their shed and find you a valve Radio.

I brought home a stack ex deceased estate recently, rather than have them trashed, there are not many restorers in that lot & I have just stacked them in the container: Condition unknown.

Those Admirals are an interesting bit of history. They were based on a US "AA5" design but completely "Australianised" with a mains transformer instead of the US practice of series heater strings and live chassis. Made at the Admiral plant at Gow st Bankstown. Yes they used PCBs in the 1950s.

Admiral in Australia were one of the casualties of the 1960 credit squeeze that killed off a lot of consumer goods manufacturers.

Having a look at the schematic for that admiral I also noticed that it uses a couplate!
Which I bet was another bright idea at the time but I’d recon it would need replacing.
Over all a cool straight forward circuit.
Although I’d recon every solder joint should be reflowed because of the thermal cycle the PCB would have gone through.

Reminds me of early AWA colour TV “thick films”.

Admiral, in the US and here, made extensive use of couplates. I don't recall ever needing to change one. But techs were suspicious of them.

The 4KA! What a disaster!

I'd assume that the couplate would have disk caps in it so it will be interesting to test it and the resistors in the package.
