I'm new to the forum and hope someone cam help with a circuit diagram.

Son in law came home with a PYE radiogram that he thought was going to be just replace a couple funny looking valves, but it has bigger problems than that.

It's smoked 2 of the valves and there's some bad capacitors in there as well. Lots of old wax's that will have to be replaced etc.

The tag says it was made by Tecnico while part of the PYE Co and has to be after 1954 as the 6N8 valve was released then.

The valve line up is 6AN7, 6N8, 12AX7, 2 x 6M5, and 6V4. These match the sticker in the cabinet

.Hoping someone may have a circuit diagram to help me out

regards
ACH

Contrary to popular belief valves are very rarely the problem unless they have been damaged by other components.

I checked Kevin Chant's site and your radio isn't there:

https://www.kevinchant.com/pye4.html

It's definitely not that one, yours is somewhat higher end, more output power...

This site (vintage-radio.com.au) does have a lot of advice about how to bring up and faultfind old gear without doing unnecessary damage. Do a search on Dim Bulb Tester for examples of such techniques.

Can anyone else help out a newbie with a circuit?

I think this model is a Pye-Fi, RG1. This would be a large console radiogram with the 6M5 outputs in push-pull. If it is the right one, it will also have a 4" tweeter. I can provide a schematic if required.

ACH, if you use Control Panel to unhide your email address I'll send you the schematic and notes.

MonochromeTV, - yes it's got a 15" main speaker and a tweeter speaker, with a big sucker wax cap in series in the line.

GTC, - that would be great. I've unhidden the email address. It should let me follow the signal paths through and decode some of the caps in there. It's fairly crowded under the chassis.
As stated there are two obvious culprits that took out the valves but I'm sure there will be more to replace.ie, do the lot and the diagram will let me check I've got all I need BEFORE I pull things out and forget where they go back.

OK, sent.

The usual suspects are capacitors. Check resistors too, but lift one end to do that.

What makes you think anything "took out the valves"?
6M5s get strange black marks inside the glass, this is perfectly normal and does not indicate the valve has been :taken out".

A few of pieces of advice:

1. Take plenty of well-focussed pictures under the chassis.

2. Wax paper caps need to be replaced but it's always better, if you can, to get the set running first, using a dim bulb tester (google it) and measuring voltages, with the circuit as a guide. Replace the caps that connect to the grids of the 6M5s first. Then fire the chassis up with a dim bulb in circuit. Once you have signs of life, you can replace the wax papers a few at a time, re-testing in between, That way, if you make a mistake (and you will) it's easier to find.

3. Think with your head, not with your hands. Measure first.

GTC -
I just checked my email and there isn't an email there from you The send may have misfired..
How big is the file, because I've struck it before that Hotmail will buffet out large files.
Could you give it another go please.

I've just sent a copy of the pdf to Brad for inclusion here.

They are not very big. I've sent them again one at a time.

PS: Sent them to my hotmail address with no problems. Check that your inbox is not full. Also check the junk folder.

Got the information thank you. I hadn't thought to look in the Junk file. They were both in there.

I've printed it out and I'll blow it out to A3 tomorrow so I can see it properly, then probably get a good look at it after that and plan my attack.

I'll let you know how I go. Thanks everyone.
