Gday all

My parents purchased this TV for their caravan back in the 70's.

Thorn Model 7433 240/12V

I have had the TV sitting in my garage for over 30 years now and would like to get it back working again.

Is it possible to be used as a TV again??

I have tried connecting to a set top box but not able to tune into a channel.

The fine tune knob is on the TV channel changer.

Pics below.

All works fine with the exception of tuning to station.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Tim

That to me looks like a VHF only set. STB's usually only output on UHF channels. You need a RF Modulator that uses CH 0/1 or 3/4.
WES Components sell one, as do their retail arm Wagner electronics, or you could use an early VCR. Feed the STB into the VCR and the VCR to the TV.

The link for the modulator is http://www.wagneronline.com.au/rf-analogue-modulator-fixed-ch1-or-ch2/resi-linx/av-tv-sat-installation/mod650-8739/10599/pd/

I have one and it works great.

Good luck with your project

Ben

I recently purchased an RF modulator that converts the signal from a set top box/DVD player into either a UHF or VHF signal at Jaycar. I use it with my 1965 Astor B&W television.

That TV dates from 1977 (after the start of colour) and could have been made by NEC, Mitsubishi or Kisho as an OEM for AWA - Thorn.

Bet you've never heard of Kisho. One of the biggest OEM manufacturers of TVs in the late 70s.

You will need a VHF modulator. Connect DC power, composite video and audio from the STB (make sure the STB is set up to output composite video and not HDMI in 4:3 aspect ratio) and you should be in business.

I know that type of TV very well.I had one of them in my room as a kid up until I left home. It is VHF only.

They were also used at TAFE Vic for a training aid mounted in a metal frame with the boards mounted in a easy way for service.

You will defiantly need something like the unit from Wagner listed above to watch any TV as the analogue service has all been turned off in Australia.

You will also need a 300 / 75 Ohm BALUN. http://www.wagneronline.com.au/matching-balun/tv-antenna-accessories/av-tv-sat-installation/tvb2b-8680/4443/pd/

This will allow you to hook up the modulator to the TV's Screw terminals. (Make sure you have the little switch in the correct position. it swaps between the Bunny Ear and the screw terminals.)

Gday all

Thanks for the great info and links to parts which I have ordered.

I am working away the next month and look forward to getting the TV working again upon my return.

Will let you know the result.

Appreciated.

Yes Tim, we're a helpful bunch here!

I just had a look at the pic of the back. It was made in Singapore, not Japan, which makes it a Kisho TV.

You should have no trouble hooking it up with the Wagner modulator and getting it working.

What channel should you use? Generally, Ch 1 will give better results, those tuners were a bit too narrow in the passband on Ch 0 causing overshoot on the video.

HI

You will need to hook up the RF mod to the TV using the "TV out" cable connected to the 300/70 Ohm Balun, Hook up an antenna to your STB antenna In, Connect the yellow Red and White cables from the Modulator to the Video, Right and Left Outputs on the STB.

House antenna should be plugged into the STB antenna port. that fact that you can see the msg "No Signal" on the TV means you have hooked up most of the cables correctly. You may have to go into the Menu on the STB and do a channel scan.... See your manual for that.
