I have a chassis that was retro fitted to an older cabinet and was wondering if the valve line up may help to recognise what it came from. I have fully restored it and would like more info on it.

valves in order from left to right.

6U7G , ECH33 , 6U7G , 6B8G , VT-65 , 6V6 , 6V6 , 6Y3

Regards
Vic

If I substitute 6C5 for VT65 the closest I come to your line up is Breville models 109, 139 and 239.

I'm wrestling with rectifiers at the moment, so I'm curious about 5Y3 versus 6Y3 in the Breville circuits.

I thought maybe difference was only heater voltage, but on checking the 5Y3 is full-wave, 6Y3 is half-wave rectifier. Could 6Y3 still substitute for 5Y3?

I've got nothing with 6Y3 in it. I used 5Y3 for my search.

6Y3 is a top cap type valve, so if it's the correct one for the set in question there will be a top cap lead.

6Y3G is a octal based diode with the cathode sharing one of the heater connections on pin 7. Probably used in a transmitter or CRT device. Until now I have never heard of such a valve.

You will cook the filaments in a 5Y3 at 6.3V.

What is wrong with the one in it.? If its working leave it. You need the current draw of the set and the new valve to know what valve to substitute. That also applies to the filament current. many rectifiers pull twice its current & the transformer may not handle it?

Franks electron tube pages will likely have data sheets for the 6Y3.

Sorry Guys ,

It has a 5Y3GT , late night brain fade.

Thanks GTC , will look up Breville, I was only searching AWA.

Looks like the cabinet is from the early 40s or late 30s very ornate and complex wood work. Must have had a powered gramophone . It now has a Collaro turntable and this chassis.

Regards
Vic
