Hi Guys,
I am restoring a 1940's (?) Peter Pan radio which I have been trying to get my hands on for years (same model which we had in the house when I was a child). On the chassis rear it is stamped ELM 886 which I am hoping is the model no. 5 valves - no markings on the valves except the rectifier which is 5Y3G and the output valve which has difficult to read markings but looks like EL3N. I have got it running, but I am looking for a circuit, can anyone help?
Also the station pointer (horizontal) has gone missing and no dial cord left. Can anyone supply a sketch of the dial cord layout to assist me when I fabricate a new dial pointer and restring the tuning capacitor?
Hoping someone can help.
Cheers Rob

Hello Rob
Alas there is no model ELM listed in
http://www.hws.org.au/RadioHistory/manufacturers/Peter%20Pan.htm
but there are two 1940 radios that have EL3Ns, one with a 5Y3G. Both are mantles.
Can you post some photos - someone will know it.
Graham

G'day Rob,
Photos can be e-mailed to me at the address on my profile page and I will host them and include the necessary code in your post.

Brad, Graham,
Graham, I had a look on HWS document you mentioned and could not see it either, although there are some gaps in that document as I understand it, but as there are a few of these radios around, I am sure there will be someone out there who knows both the model and has schematic and dial cord set up to share.
Good suggestion re pix, I have sent a pix of radio to Brad for him to put into this thread. Hopefully with pix someone will be able to identify valve lineup and can point to a circuit and most important a dial cord diagram.
Cheers
Rob

There used to be a list of models on
http://www.southcom.com.au/~pauledgr/
which now bounces.
Is there a new link to this?

That site became http://thebakeliteradio.com/ as far as I know.

Guys,
Further to my earlier post, I have relooked at the valves in the set and strained my eyes severely, but this is the valve lineup currently in the set:
V1 - undecipherable, V2 - 6U7G, V3 - 6B6G, V4 - EL3N, V5 - 5Y3G.
The set is currently working on this lineup. I have recapped it and it is working. I have yet to check out the resistors, nor have I touched alignment. The way it sounds, I dont think there is much of a problem with resistors or alignment. Circuit would be great as a reference to check resistors as the ones in the set are the old type colour codings (body colours, end colour etc etc).
Cheers
Rob

Has to be a mixer 6A7 6A8 6J8
Looks like it might be a dual wave so 6J8 would be best in that application.
Have you tried the freezer trick - 10 minutes in the freezer might show up the id with condensation.

Brad - many thanks for loading the pix.
Graham - I know the valve in the freezer trick, unfortunately the undecipherable valve is coated with red conductive paint a percentage of which has peeled a little - you've guessed it - right where the valve ID would be - sigh!!
Agree - has to be a mixer valve - bound to be someone here who knows this model and can tell us.
Rob.

I couldn't sleep early this morning so I decided to get up and do some digging.
According to 'The Best Years of Australian Radio' (Rod Smith), this set is a model BKJ of 1947. By this time, Peter Pan receivers were made by Radio Corporation.

G'day Fellas,
Radio Corporation made radios which were badged under many names. Among them were Astor, Monarch and Peter Pan.
The Monarch BKJ was first produced in 1939 and later in 1947. The Peter Pan BKJ was produced in 1946 and 1947.
Circuits in the AORSM for these radios are identical.
Valve lineup is; 6J8G, 6U7G, 6B6G, 6V6G and 5Y3G.
A parts list for the BKJ also applies for the ELN.
As for the ELM model, I suggest that due to parts shortage, the EL3N was substituted for the 6V6 with some changes to the biasing, and the model number
upgraded from the ELN.
A good example of parts substitution is the Kriesler 11-7
which had valve changes, tuning capacitor and dial glass
changes, and a number of circuit changes. There are
three pages in the AORSM describing the various model
numbers brought about by these changes. eg 11-7,
11-7A, 11-7...G.
Rob, If you would like copies of the circuit notes, let me know your email address and I'll forward them on to you.
Cheers, Graham...

Graham,
You have been busy! Thanks for that my friend. I have changed my profile so if you go to it you will now be able to see my email address. I will be grateful for all you can send me on this lovely model Peter Pan.
Cheers
Rob

Hi Rob,
Check your inbox. Should be two emails with attatchments containing the schematics/parts lists.
Will search further for any dial stringing info.
Cheers, Graham...

Graham,
Received your material/docs/schematics which you so generously shared - see my personal email. Again many thanks.
Logically, I would expect that the ELN model would have followed the ELM model. If that is true, then the change to the 6V6G valve from the EL3N would have been a later change - does that make sense? Do you think there would be many differences in the circuit (biasing etc) to accomodate the EL3N? If so is there any information available on this?
Even though the radio is working, a close look reveals that the wave change is not working and looking at the switch and the really amateurish wiring and soldering, it is obvious this section of the radio has been "got at" and BODGED.
I am really going to have my work cut out sorting out the mess in the wiring in this area. A quick check of what I think are the relevant coils (didn't have your circuit then) suggests the coils are all continuous and not open circuit. Looks like some more fun getting it back to original. The joys of restoration!!!
Rob
PS: taking a closer look at the dial glass, there is no marking of SW bands at all - very curious - or is this normal for this model? Maybe the dial glass has also been replaced at some stage!?
