Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have data on a 6M5 valve or know of a reasonable substitute. These guys appeared on so many radios in the 50's and 60's but it seems only in Australia. As a result I can't find any data from internation data resources.

As anyone who knows, this valve has a tendancy to wear out a little too easily so replacing with a substitute is probably the best course of action to take, I think.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Michael

Hi Michael

This Silicon Chip article has a bit to say on 6M5s, and suggests 6BQ5 & 6BM8, with alterations

I have data but am running slow as I am back to dial up. Something like a tired snaill assuming it holds.

6M5 is a 9 pin Pentode 250V Load 7K

Try Franks electron tube pages Bias & pinouts will be in need of change for those other tubes.

6BM8 is a triode Pentode.

Hi,
Thanks so much for the replies to my questions. While some data on the 6m5 will still be usefull for comparitive ratings, I'll go with the 6bq5 sub and rewire the socket. At least I could get a pinout diagram of the 6m5 but the big question is heater current draw I guess.

In the meantime I was also recommended to use the 6ck6(noval socket) with a slight rewire too. Trouble is they're $25 a pop plus matching fee and postage. Ouch! I've got plenty of good used 6bq5's lying 'round.

Thanks again,
Michael

PS the el41 6ck5 has a totally different base like an octal bayonet or something quite odd like that requiring a socket refitt if you can get it.

6BQ5 Recommended cathode resistor in PP 130 Ohm .300V 8000 Ohm load plate to plate.

Pin 1 IC; Pin2 G1; Pin3 cathode & supressor; Pin4 & 5 Heaters; Pin6 IC; Pin7 Anode; Pin 8 IC; Pin 9 Screen.

Power out Class AB 17 Watts (6M5 9.4) 50mA more heater current each valve. More bias will slow don the 6BQ5 ie bigger cathode resistor.

Marc
